Chasing Waterfalls and Beyond
Top Eastside Spots for Nature Lovers
Approximately 24 miles east of Salem lies one of Oregon’s most iconic natural treasures: Silver Falls State Park, known as the “Crown Jewel” of Oregon State Parks. The Trail of Ten Falls allows you to walk behind thunderous waterfalls—an unforgettable experience and a perfect spot for celebratory post-race photos with your IRONMAN medal. The park also offers miles of single-track biking trails and a tree-climbing experience for adventurous travelers. After exploring the falls, visit the charming town of Silverton, filled with boutique shops, local cafés, and welcoming small-town charm. Just beyond Silverton, the Oregon Garden showcases more than 130 acres of specialty botanical gardens celebrating the diverse plant life of the Willamette Valley and the Pacific Northwest. Families will enjoy the Pet-Friendly Garden, Children’s Garden, and themed landscapes throughout the property. While in town, consider touring the Gordon House—the only Frank Lloyd Wright–designed home in Oregon—for a fascinating dose of architectural history. Further east, outdoor enthusiasts can visit North Santiam State Park for river access and hiking, or Detroit Lake to rent a boat, fish, or enjoy the area’s inviting coves and cool mountain air. The Benedictine Brewery and Taproom is also close by. The monks at Mount Angel Abbey, in the spirit of a centuries-old monastic tradition, use homegrown hops and pristine Oregon water, to brew their beers right on Abbey grounds. A walk up to the Hilltop at the Abbey is a great way to end your day.
