Wine tasting, farmers markets and festivals

Head to the Salem-area this month to celebrate the start of wine tasting season and the return of several farmers markets and festivals. From blooming gardens to downtown events, there’s plenty to see and do in May:

  1. Arcane Cellars Big Red Release Party
    If you like wine and chocolate, make sure you check out the debut of Arcane Cellars’ Big Red wine. There will be wine and chocolate pairings, sandwiches, salads and live music in the tasting room. Enjoy the fun on May 7. 
  2. Bloom Season at Schreiner’s Iris Gardens

The display gardens are planted with more than 500 iris varieties and countless companion plants. Join the garden for special events throughout the season, including a Mother’s Day celebration, Memorial Day Weekend events and an artist fair.
  3. Chardonnay Day at ROCO Winery
    Taste chardonnay from ROCO Winery at Chardonnay Day on May 6. The winery, located in Newburg, will be pairing the wines with appetizers. There will even be a few bottles of 2010 chardonnay pulled from the library.
  4. Chemeketa Planetarium Solar Eclipse Show
    Every Friday, there is a showing of “Eclipse: The Sun Revealed,” at the Chemeketa Planetarium.  Not only is this educational and intriguing, it is also a great way to prepare for the Aug. 2017 solar eclipse. Chemeketa astronomers will be there to discuss the cultural and scientific aspects of this exciting event. 
  5. Cinco de Micro Brewfest
    The Cinco de Micro Brewfest is back for its sixth year featuring a plethora of local and Northwest brews May 4-6 at the Salem Convention Center. Along with beer, there will be local eateries, distilleries and live music. The event is for ages 21 and older.
  6. Conversation Project: The Space Between Us
    Explore the rise of global displacement with conversation leader Manuel Padilla on May 4 at the Dallas Public Library. Topics such as immigrants, refugees, identity, perception, hospitality and integration will be discussed.
  7. Detroit Lake Fishing Derby
    Kane's Marina ~ Detroit, OregonThe annual Detroit Lake Fishing Derby, a highly-anticipated, family-friendly event, is May 19-21. Detroit Lake is stocked with thousands of rainbow trout, ten of which are tagged for cash prizes. With prizes for all age groups, there are several ways to win. Participants and spectators alike will have a blast.
  8. Discover MI Town
    Explore the downtown areas on Monmouth and Independence on May 20.  Purchase tickets to ride a shuttle from each downtown and visit local restaurants, stores and organizations. Each participating business will offer a free sample or promotional item to ticket holders.
  9. First Wednesday in Downtown Salem
    Shop, dine, drink and have fun on the first Wednesday of the month, May 3, in downtown Salem. There will be a street fair with live music, food trucks, vendors, artists and a beer garden from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Several downtown businesses will also be open late.
  10. Glide & Ride Fundraiser
    This 14-mile recreational bicycle ride on May 13 starts and ends at Schreiner’s Iris Gardens in Salem. Participants will receive an iris stem after the ride! All proceeds will benefit the Adult Congenital Heart Association. 
  11. Happy Hour at Honeywood Winery
    Every third Friday of the month, Honeywood Winery hosts happy hour. Here you can enjoy great food, wine and an amazing ambiance. The event will take place on May 19 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.
  12. Independence Riverview Market
    Shop directly from Oregon’s farmers and artisans in historic downtown Independence. The summer market is open every Saturday in May from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The market features local produce, handmade crafts, sweet treats, meats and cheeses.
  13. “Jesus Christ Superstar” at Pentacle Theatre
    There’s still a chance to see this rock opera that retells the last days of Jesus Christ. Catch this iconic story May 3-6 at the Pentacle Theatre.
  14. Johan Vineyards Syttende Mai (Constitution Day) Celebration
    Johan Vineyards will celebrate the Norwegian heritage of vineyard founder Dag Sundby on May 20.  Enjoy Norwegian food, a Scandinavian chorus, traditional costumes and of course, wine!
  15. Keizer Iris Festival
    The annual Keizer Iris Festival is May 18-21 in downtown Keizer! Partake in a weekend full of live music, brews and wine, a carnival, car show and more.
  16. May Flowers Show
    We have all heard the saying, “April showers bring May flowers.” To honor the arrival of new blooms, Elsinore Framing & Fine Art Gallery will host 22 artists in a floral-themed show during the month of May. An artist reception will be held during Salem’s First Wednesday. Admission is free.
  17. McMenamins UFO Festival
    Are you a fan of aliens and all the interesting stories about extraterrestrial life?  If so, the McMenamins UFO Festival is the event for you. Taking place May 18-21 in McMinnville, UFO experts, skeptics, adults and children are invited to enjoy live music, speakers, games, costume contests and a parade.
  18. McMinnville Saturday Market
    Visit McMinnville’s year-round farmers market! The market is open every Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Vendors sell produce, handmade gifts, skin care products and more. 
  19. Memorial Day Wine Weekend
    Mid-Willamette Valley vineyardKick off the summer wine tasting season over Memorial Day Weekend as more than 150 Willamette Valley wineries host special events and tastings. Taste new wines, listen to live music and enjoy food pairings from May 27-29.
  20. Newburg Memorial Weekend Boat Races
    The 69th annual Memorial Weekend Boat Races will be held May 27-28 at Rogers Landing County Park. The two-day event will feature sanctioned heat racing of hydroplanes, runabouts and tunnel boats. Spectators are invited to watch the races and enjoy food and beverages from local vendors.
  21. Powerland Heritage Park Family Celebration Craft Fair
    A craft fair, farmers market, trolley and mini-train rides and 14 heritage museums can all be enjoyed May 20-21 at Powerland Heritage Park. This is an event that both families and history lovers will enjoy!
  22. Red Ridge Mother’s Day Hanging Basket Class
    Stroll through the nursery and pick out plants to create your own hanging basket on May 13 at the Oregon Olive Mill. Brunch bites and specialty teas will also be offered. RSVPs are required.
  23. Ribs & Red at Eola Wine Cellars
    Eola Hills Wine Cellars will host the first annual Ribs & Red event at the Legacy Estate Vineyard on May 29. The event will feature wine, gourmet ribs, live music by Thunder Road and a classic car showcase. Veterans will receive a complimentary tasting.
  24. Salem Downtown Markets
    Market produce ~ Salem, OregonThe Salem Saturday Market, Hospital Market and Wednesday Farmers Market will be held every week in May. The Saturday Market is 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 865 Marion Street. The Hospital Market is held every Monday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Salem Hospital. The Wednesday Market is 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 530 Chemeketa Street. The markets feature local produce, flowers, food, crafts and more.
  25. Salsa Lessons at Cubanisimo Vineyards
    Join Cubanisimo Vineyards for its monthly salsa lesson on May 20! The one-hour lesson is taught by the vineyard’s resident instructor. There will also be hors d’oeuvres and wine tasting.  RSVPs are required at least 24 hours in advance.
  26. Sheep to Shawl Festival
    Sheep shearing demonstrations, textile arts demonstrations, live music and animals are just a few things to expect from the 32nd Annual Sheep to Shawl Festival on May 13. The free festival celebrates the history of the Thomas Kay Woolen Mill. 
  27. Sip & Stroll at Left Coast Cellars
    Left Coast has a beautiful and sustainably-farmed estate. From May 27-29, you can explore the estate while sipping on new spring releases. After the stroll, enjoy a wood-fired pizza on the patio or lawn.
  28. Taco Crawl
    Hornitos Tequila is putting on a three-day taco event in celebration of Cinco de Mayo.  Eat all the tacos you want May 3-5. The tacos are available at various restaurants in downtown Salem.  Bring your friends and empty stomachs for a delicious way to kick off May!
  29. Taste Dundee
    Kick off Oregon Wine Month with the wineries of the Dundee Hills on May 6. Enjoy wines from 25 different wineries, local eats and live music. 
  30. Timbers U23
    The Timbers U23, an amateur team affiliated with the Portland Timbers, kicks off the season this May at McCulloch Stadium in Salem! The team consists of standout players from collegiate and youth programs throughout the country. Enjoy a soccer game with friends, family or fellow fans!
