Happenings near Salem, Oregon, this month

It’s the shortest month of the year, but there is still plenty to do near Salem, Oregon. Here are 28 things to check out in February: 

1.    18th Annual Clay Ball: Masterpieces
The Clay Ball auction and dinner attracts 500 guests every year to raise money for the Salem Art Association. The Feb. 25 event will include both silent and live auctions featuring original work from local artists. A ticket to the ball includes appetizers, a catered dinner, dessert, wine from Bryn Mawr Vineyards and craft beer from Gilgamesh Brewing. 

2.    “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”
Shakespeare’s adored comedy will come alive at the Historic Elsinore Theatre on Feb. 1. Performed by the Eugene Ballet Company, the show will whisk you away from winter’s cold to the warm, lush green forests of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.” 

3.    BANFF Mountain Film Festival World Tour
Meet the world’s top adventurers and experience the exhilarating beauty of the mountains at the BANFF Mountain Film Festival. The festival’s world tour comes to Salem’s Historic Grand Theatre on Feb. 13. 

4.    Bubbles Fest
Anne Amie Vineyards’ annual sparkling wine festival will be held on Feb. 11. Take in the incredible views from the vineyard, sip wine from 19 different Oregon wineries and enjoy locally crafted appetizers.

Salem’s Riverfront Carousel will host Cupid’s Night Out on Feb. 12. Attendees can participate in unlimited carousel rides, games, cookie decorating, face painting and a photo booth. Tickets are $5 per person. 

6.    First Wednesday at Travel Salem
Stop by the Travel Salem Visitor Center on First Wednesday! From 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Feb. 1, Travel Salem will be offering free wine tastings from Honeywood winery and chocolate samples from Cherry Country. There will also be heart-shaped cookies to decorate from Roth’s Fresh Markets. Afterwards, visit more downtown businesses to participate in other First Wednesday events.

7.    Gilbert House Legacy of Play Day
Receive free admission to Gilbert House Children’s Museum from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Feb. 20. Guests are invited to share in A.C. Gilbert’s spirit of tinkering, engagement and discovery. 

8.    Illahe Vineyards Valentine’s Fondue and S’mores Party
Take your valentine to enjoy an afternoon of wine, fondue and s’mores around the Illahe Vineyards fire pit. The event is Feb. 11 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

9.    “Lear’s Daughters”
Learn what happened to King Lear’s three daughters before they made their entrances in Shakespeare’s classic play. The story explores innocence turned to tragic cynicism. The show runs Feb. 17-25 at Willamette University. 

10.    Mid-Valley Winter Ag Fest
Reconnect rural and urban life Feb. 25-26 at the Mid-Valley Winer Ag Fest. Held at the Polk County Fairgrounds, families can learn about agriculture, purchase handcrafted food and products, visit the petting zoo or tour the Polk County Museum and Historical Society.

Celebrate German heritage at Mount Angel’s Wurstfest Feb. 24-25. The festival will offer the best handcrafted German sausages and beers. There will also be live German music, dancing, games and demonstrations. 

12.     Mystery Writer Carola Dunn at the Salem Book Bin
Carola Dunn is the author of approximately 60 books, including 22 mysteries in the famous Daisy Dalrymple series. She’ll be speaking at the Salem Book Bin on Feb. 4. 

13.    Oregon’s 158th Birthday at the Oregon State Capitol
Commemorate Oregon’s 158th birthday with a weeklong celebration at the Oregon State Capitol. The festivities kick off on Feb. 11, with historical costumed interpreters, reenactments, fiddlers, children’s activities and more. 

Cherry Country chocolates and wine14.    Pinot & Chocolate Celebration
Willamette Valley Vineyards will pair its award-winning Pinot noirs with decadent chocolate dishes from the winery chef and treats from local artisans. The event takes place Feb. 11-12. 

15.    Pint Size Painting Workshop
Children ages 8-14 are invited to participate in a free painting workshop at the Bush Barn Art Center on Feb. 4. Learning from Corrine Loomis-Dietz, each child will create two masterpieces inspired by the Cubist movement. One of the paintings will be donated to “Clay Ball: Masterpieces,” a fundraising event. 

16.    Polk Home and Garden Show
Find inspiration for your home and garden at the 10th Annual Polk Home and Garden Show Feb. 25-26 at the Polk County Fairgrounds. Vendors will be showcasing flooring materials, furniture, spas and more. 

17.    Salem Audubon Society Birding Walk: Minto-Brown Island Park
Join the Salem Audubon Society for a bird walk through Minto-Brown Island Park on Feb. 23. Sparrows, nuthatches and wrens are just some of the birds that may be spotted. 

18.    Salem Symphony “Pictures at an Exhibition”
The Salem Symphony will bring to life Mussorgsky’s “Pictures at an Exhibition” and “Night on Bald Mountain” on Feb. 18 at the Historic Elsinore Theatre. The evening will begin will an art showcase and wine tasting. 

19.    Salem Winter Brewfest
More than 100 handcrafted beers and ciders will be on tap at this year’s Salem Winter Brewfest. The event will also feature some of the best food and entertainment in the Willamette Valley.  The 21-and-over event will be held Feb. 1-4 at the Oregon State Capitol Mall. 

20.    “The Sensational Sixties”
Relive the 1960s as the Chehalem Players Repertory performs “The Sensational Sixties” on Feb. 3 and 4. The show will feature more than 35 Broadway hits from the decade. Audience members are encouraged to dress in fashion from the 1960s. 

21.    Silverton Poetry Festival
The 17th Annual Silverton Poetry Festival will be held Feb. 24-26 at various locations in the community. Throughout the weekend, festivalgoers are invited to participate in poetry readings, workshops and music. 

22.    Spring RV Show
Hundreds of new and used RVs from Oregon’s top dealerships are coming to the State Fairgrounds for four days in February. See the latest product innovations, watch demonstrations and partake in family-friendly entertainment Feb. 9-12. 

23.    Super Bowl Ll at Youngberg Hill
Watch the Super Bowl while tailgating beside the fireplace at Youngberg Hill on Feb. 5. The game will be playing on two large screens and tailgate food, wine and beer will be available for purchase. 

24.    Taproot Lounge & Café Open Mic Night
Share songs, poems, jokes, stories or skits at Taproot Lounge & Café’s open mic night on Feb. 7. You can also enjoy the café’s food and drinks. 

25.    Urban Farmer Gardening Classes
Whether you’re new to gardening or an expert, this class will teach you how to create your own urban garden while cultivating friendships and communities. The eight-course class starts on Feb. 4 at Pringle Creek Community. 

26.    Valentine’s Day Chocolate, Wine and Music
Arcane Cellars will host Missionary Chocolates at the winery on Feb. 12. Indulge in wine, chocolate, artisan sandwiches and pizza while enjoying performances from Tara Velarde, an Indie folk singer from Portland 

Goats27.    Valentine’s Day Couples Goat Yoga & Wine Tasting at Emerson Vineyards
If you’re looking for a unique Valentine’s Day idea, head to Emerson Vineyards for goat yoga. On Feb. 11 and 12, the vineyard will host hour-long goat yoga sessions followed by a wine tasting. Only a limited number of tickets are available. 

28.    Winter’s Hill Vineyard Pruning Workshop
Join Winter’s Hill’s owner and winemaker in the vineyard for a pruning workshop on Feb. 5.  After the workshop, participants will be invited back to the winery to enjoy lunch and wine.
