Festivals, performances and exhibits
It’s the shortest month of the year, but there is still plenty to do near Salem, Oregon! Here’s a look at what is happening this month:
1. A Historic Evening with Eva Schloss
Eva Schloss, the childhood friend and stepsister of Anne Frank, will speak at Willamette University’s Smith Auditorium, in Salem, on Feb. 22. She will speak of her times with Anne and her family’s experiences at Willamette University.
2. Beer + Chocolate Mini-Fest
Sample beer and chocolate at Salem Ale Works, in Salem, on Feb. 10. The brewery will be releasing six dark beers to pair with chocolates from Moonstruck Chocolate Company.
3. “Burn This”
This drama tells the story of two outcasts in 1980s New York and their determined struggle toward emotional honesty and liberation. Catch the show on select dates in February at Willamette University’s M. Lee Pelton Theatre in Salem.
4. Cupid’s Night Out at the Carousel
Head to Salem’s Riverfront Carousel on Feb. 10 for a night of Valentine’s Day fun. For $5 per person, there will be unlimited carousel rides, crafts, activities, cookie decorating, games and a photo booth.
5. Daddy & Daughter Dinner Dance
Attention all Dads! Bring your daughter out for dinner, dancing and games on Feb. 3. The Valentine’s Day-themed event will take place at Woodburn Health Center in Woodburn, Oregon.
6. Disenchanted: Hit Musical
Your favorite princesses are coming to Salem, and they’re setting the record straight. These royal renegades are tossing off their tiaras to bring their hilariously subversive, not-for-the-kiddies musical to the Elsinore Theatre Feb. 8-9.
7. Good Works Auction: Setting the Stage
The Rotary Club of Salem is hosting a night of fun, festivities and feel-good fundraising to benefit the youth in the community and support the Gerry Frank Rotary Amphitheater. The event will be held at the Salem Convention Center on Feb. 10. Tickets are required.
8. Legacy of Play Day
Join the Gilbert House Children’s Museum, in Salem, for a day of free, family fun on Feb. 19. The museum honors its namesake, A.C. Gilbert, by encouraging innovation and play.
9. Mid-Valley Winter Ag Fest
Purchase food, plants and hand-crafted goods from local farms and vendors Feb. 24-25 at the Polk County Fairgrounds in Rickreall, Oregon. There will also be a petting zoo, seminars on agriculture and educational activities for children.
10. MiyakoCon 3
This two-day convention is full of anime and pop culture content. There will be gaming, screenings, contests, workshops, artists and more. The event is Feb. 24-25 at the Red Lion in Salem.
11. MK Guth: Paying Attention
Throughout the month of February, the Hallie Ford Museum of Art, located in Salem, will feature the work of MK Guth, a nationally-recognized Portland, Oregon, artist. The exhibit features a range of new and previously created still-life installations.
12. Mt. Angel Wurstfest
Celebrate the best of the wurst at Mt. Angel Wurstfest! The 10th annual festival will feature authentic German cuisine, brews, live entertainment, an artisan market and children’s activities. The festival is Feb. 9-10.
13. Murder in the Cellar
Join Eola Hills Wine Cellars, in Rickreall, for a mystery dinner on Feb. 14. Dinner will be catered by Adams Ribs. Admission is $79.
14. Oregon Pioneer Spirit Folk Music Play-In
The Brown House Event Center, in Stayton, Oregon, will celebrate pioneer spirit with a concert on Feb. 4. There will be poetry readings and musical performances. Admission is free.
15. Oregon’s 159th Birthday
Commemorate the 159th birthday of Oregon’s statehood on Feb. 17 at the Oregon State Capitol. Celebrate in style with costumed interpreters, cupcakes, period music and activities that are fun for the entire family. Admission is free.
16. Paint Your Partner Couples Painting Class
Paint your partner at Barrel and Keg, in Salem, on Feb. 16. A Young at Art instructor will guide you step-by-step to capture your partner on canvas. The event is $30 per couple.
17. Polk Home & Garden Show
The 11th annual Polk Home & Garden Show is Feb. 24-25 at the Polk County Fairgrounds in Rickreall. There will be seminars, vendor booths and activities for the entire family.
18. Salem Art Association Clay Ball
The Salem Art Association’s 19th Annual Clay Ball is Feb. 24 at the Salem Convention Center. This year’s theme, Silver Screen, will immerse guests in the glamour of old Hollywood. There will be a silent auction, gourmet food, dancing and a live auction. Tickets are required.
19. Salem Winter Brewfest
Salem Winter Brewfest is a 21 and older event that features more than 100 handcrafted beers and ciders on tap, live entertainment and a variety of food options. The festival takes place Feb. 1-3 in front of the Oregon State Capitol.
20. Sunday Musica at Coria Estates
Local musician JT Meier will perform at Coria Estates, in Salem, on Feb. 4. JT's repertoire spans the generations. Admission is free.
21. The Young Dubliners
A year after releasing their latest Celtic rock album, “NINE,” The Young Dubliners are hitting the road and playing every show like it's the last. They will perform at Salem’s Elsinore Theatre on Feb. 24.
22. Valentine’s Day Chocolate, Wine, Music & Jewelry Celebration
Treat your valentine to a wine and chocolate pairing with Missionary Chocolates at Arcane Cellars, in Salem, on Feb. 11. There will also be live music and a locally-designed jewelry trunk show.
23. Wednesday Film Series: “La La Land”
Take your date to see the award-winning film “La La Land” at Salem’s Elsinore Theatre on Feb. 14. Tickets are $6.
24. Wild Women Exhibit
Visit the River Gallery, in Independence, Oregon, through Feb. 22 to view the Wild Women 2018 Exhibit. The theme of the exhibit, “HerStory,” celebrates the spirit of womanhood. The gallery is open Tuesday through Saturday.
25. World Beat Bash
World Beat's annual benefit celebration returns Feb. 17 at Salem’s Reed Opera House. It will be an evening full of food, drink and dance. Tickets are required.
