Wineries, fairs and historical attractions
August is here! Take a tour through a historic theater, visit Salem’s first craft distillery or attend the annual state fair this month near Salem, Oregon.
1. Aurora Colony Days
Experience Old Aurora’s famous German hospitality on Aug. 10 with a family-friendly beer garden, food and music. On Aug. 11, there will be a parade, car show and sidewalk sale. The Old Aurora Colony Museum will also offer free admission and special activities that day.
2. Brooks Wines Secret Supper
Looking for a mystery? Brooks Wines is hosting a secret supper somewhere on its Amity, Oregon, property on Aug. 4. You won't know the food, the wine or the theme, but you’ll be in for a real treat. Tickets are required.
3. Capitol Pride Festival
With a goal of building a community for everyone, the Capitol Pride Festival celebrates people and focuses on inclusion. The free festival will be held at Salem’s Riverfront Park on Aug. 4, with food, drinks and music.
4. Divine Distillers Opening Celebration
Divine Distillers, Salem’s first craft distillery, is opening its doors to the public for a celebration on Aug. 11. There will be tastings, cocktails, food and free tours of the distillery.
5. Elsinore Theatre Tours
Get a behind-the-scenes look at Salem’s Elsinore Theatre every Wednesday in August. Built in 1926, the theater has stunning stained window glass, murals designed to represent Shakespearean plays and the largest theater organ in a performing arts center in the Pacific Northwest. Call ahead to reserve your spot. Tickets are $5.
6. Englewood Forest Festival
The Englewood Forest Festival will highlight local artists, musicians and businesses at Englewood Park, in Salem, on Aug. 11. The free, family-friendly festival will have food trucks, music and dance, art vendors and activities for all ages.
7. Eola Hills Summer Concert Series
Catch the last three shows of Eola Hills’ summer concert series on Aug. 10, 24 and 31. Featuring artists such as Cloverdayle and Dancehall Days, the shows are held at Legacy Estate Vineyard in Salem. Tickets are required.
8. Fiesta Mexicana
A family-friendly celebration of Hispanic culture, Woodburn’s annual Fiesta Mexicana is Aug. 3-5. Held at Legion park, there will be delicious food, entertainment, classic cars, a parade and soccer tournament.
9. Fish Fest
Fish Fest, Oregon’s largest Christian music festival, returns to Salem’s Riverfront Park on Aug. 18. Tickets are required.
10. Great Salem Race
Make your way through Salem by solving clues and completing challenges at the Great Salem Race on Aug. 18. This family-friendly event will cover approximately three to five miles on foot and will have an after-party with food and music.
11. High Street Hustle
Mark your calendar for the annual High Street Hustle on Aug. 11. The 8K run, 5K run/walk and 1K kid’s run start at the Oregon State Capitol and travel through downtown Salem. Afterwards, there will be food, beer and a costume contest.
12. Homer Davenport Community Festival
Homer Davenport, an internationally-renowned cartoonist from Silverton, Oregon, will be celebrated Aug. 3-5 at Coolidge McClaine Park in Silverton. The festival will feature a cartoon contest, parade, international food court, arts and craft fair and entertainment.
Hoopla, the second largest three-on-three street basketball event in the country, is Aug. 4-5 in Salem. Put together a team to compete or be a spectator at the annual dunk competition.
14. Molly Mo’s Summer Antique Faire
Find antique, vintage, repurposed and handcrafted goods at Molly Mo’s Summer Antique Faire on Aug. 10-11 in Sublimity, Oregon. Located just off Highway 214, there will also be down-home cooking, live entertainment and a beer and wine tent.
15. On Your Feet Friday
Walk or run through downtown Salem at “On Your Feet Friday” on Aug. 10. Along the way, stop at eight checkpoints to discover local businesses and attractions.
16. Oregon State Fair
The Oregon State Fair is Aug. 24 – Sept. 3 in Salem. The fair will host big-name entertainment, dozens of competitions, livestock, carnival rides and so much more.
17. Pairings! A Celebration of Oregon
Savor notable flavors from some of Oregon’s premier chefs, winemakers, distillers, and brew masters on Aug. 17 at “Pairings! A Celebration of Oregon.” Held at the Oregon State Fairgrounds, in Salem, the event will showcase some of the area’s leading restaurants, breweries and wineries and an 11-piece show band. Tickets are required.
18. Peach of a Century Bicycle Ride
The Salem Bicycle Club’s annual Peach of a Century Bicycle Ride is Aug. 26. Starting and ending at Chemeketa Community College, in Salem, the ride has a 66-mile route, 76-mile route and 100-mile route. Pre-registration is required.
19. Polk County Fair
The Polk County Fair is Aug. 9-11 in Rickreall, Oregon. This classic county fair will have musicians, a rodeo, livestock and children’s activities.
20. Riverfront Family Fest
Family Building Blocks’ annual family festival is Aug. 4 at Salem’s Riverfront Park. Children and parents will learn about health, safety and neighborhood connections.
21. Something to Wine About
Laurie Forster, The Standup Sommelier, is performing her wine-focused stand-up comedy routine at Willamette Valley Vineyards, in Turner, Oregon, on Aug. 30. The show will be paired with wine and a handcrafted dinner.
22. Starry Starry Nite at Airlie Winery
A tradition like no other, Airlie Winery, in Monmouth, Oregon, invites you to pitch a tent and camp out around the pond or in the vineyard on Aug. 11. The evening will be filled with music and dancing followed by a late-night showing of the Perseid meteor shower.
23. Summer Sundays at Lady Hill Winery
Lady Hill Winery, in St. Paul, Oregon, is serving up fine fare, great wine and a relaxing Sunday dinner with friends and family of all ages on Aug. 12 and 26. Tickets are required.
24. Twilight on the River
In celebration of Willamette Valley Hospice, 24,000 luminarias will glow at twilight in Salem’s Riverfront Park on Aug. 23. Each light represents someone who has brought love, laughter and light into our lives.
25. Zimbabwean Song and Dance Workshop
River Gallery, in Independence, Oregon, is hosting a free workshop featuring Zimbabwean songs and dancing on Aug. 8.
