Concerts, hikes and wine tasting

Despite cooler weather in the Willamette Valley, there are plenty of indoor and outdoor events happening in January. Attend a concert, hike a state park or visit a winery this month!
 
1.  3 Doors Down Acoustic: Back Porch Jam
The Elsinore Theatre, in Salem, is hosting 3 Doors Down on Jan. 17 for an acoustic interpretation of the band’s hits, fan favorites and deep album cuts. All ticket purchasers will receive a limited-edition digital EP.
 
2.  Brahms’ First Symphony
Brahms' First Symphony took almost 20 years to write. It brilliantly demonstrates Brahms' amazing melodic and orchestral prowess. Hear it on Jan. 26 at Willamette University’s Smith Auditorium.
 
3.  Cascade Half Marathon, 10K and 2 mile
Whether you are running the half marathon or the 10k and two-mile fun run, this annual event will get your heart rate pumping. The run/walk will start at Cascade Junior High School in Turner, Oregon, on Jan. 14.

Painter Stephen Kekule will be the Salem Art Association’s Featured Artist from Jan. 20-Feb. 25. His vibrant, geometric works explore architectural surroundings.

​Free guided hikes will be offered at state parks across the state on Jan. 1. There will be a three-mile hike at Silver Falls State Park, a two-mile hike at Champoeg State Heritage Area and a one-mile hike at the State Capitol State Park.

6.  First Taste Oregon
First Taste Oregon returns to the Oregon State Fair and Expo Center from Jan. 26-27. Enjoy brews, cider, food, wine, spirits and specialty shopping from more than 100 vendors.
 
7.  Free Carousel Rides on New Year’s Day
Salem’s Riverfront Carousel is offering free carousel rides on New Year's Day. Bring along a canned food donation to support the Marion-Polk Food Share.
 
8.  Heroes and Rebels: A Tribute to David Bowie
An all-star group of musicians pays tribute to one of the greatest artists of all time, David Bowie, at Salem’s Elsinore Theatre on Jan. 13. It is the group’s final show.
 
9.  Mid-Valley Home Show
The Mid-Valley Home Show celebrates its 41st year as the oldest, largest and best-attended home show in the Mid-Willamette Valley. Meet with the experts and see hundreds of exhibits showcasing the latest in-home products and services Jan. 12-14 at the Oregon State Fairgrounds!

Join the Gallagher Fitness crew every Monday for a casual three-mile run or two-mile walk in Salem. All abilities are welcome. 
 
11.  Oregon Wedding Showcase
Discover venues, sample food and desserts, gather ideas for decor, experience a wedding fashion show and more at the Oregon Wedding Showcase! It will be held at the Oregon State Fair and Expo Center from Jan. 27-28.
 
12.  Polk Flea Market
Find a treasure at the Polk Flea Market on Jan. 7! Held at the Polk County Fairgrounds, it’s the county’s oldest and largest flea market. There will be antiques, jewelry, furniture, tools and more.

Learn the basic steps, twirls, and hand loops used in Salsa at 1859 Cider Company in downtown Salem every Sunday! For $10, you’ll receive a 45-minute Salsa lesson and a drink ticket.
 
14.  Sunday Chess Club
Join the Taproot Lounge & Café crew every Sunday for Chess Club in downtown Salem. There is both casual and competitive play. Admission is free.
 
15.  TEDxSalem V
TEDxSalem V is bringing people together to share a TED-like experience. There will be talks and performances by community members, lots of food and networking! This educational and fun event is Jan. 6 at the Salem Convention Center.
 
16.  Traxxas Monster Truck Tour
The Traxxas Monster Truck Tour is coming to the Oregon State Fairgrounds on Jan. 13. Along with an impressive lineup, there will be driver autograph sessions, truck rides and a pit party.
 
17.  When it Rains, I Pour! Wine Wednesdays
Chateau Bianca, in Dallas, Oregon, is celebrating wine Wednesday every week in January. If it is raining during your visit, they will offer two tastings for the price of one, 50 percent off glasses of wine and 20 percent off bottles!

Just west of Salem, this wildlife refuge is a sanctuary for wintering geese, great blue heron, bald eagles and more. Parts of the refuge are closed while the geese are in residence, but observation decks, refuge roads and a trail are open year-round for viewing opportunities. 

19.  Yoga in the Garden
The Oregon Garden, in Silverton, Oregon, offers yoga classes every Friday and Sunday morning. Classes are held in the Fireside Lounge during the winter. Bring a mat, towel and water!
 
20.  Yoga + Wine at Eola Hills
Detox and retox with Yoga + Wine at Eola Hills Wine Cellars, in Rickreall, Oregon, on Jan 8. The all-levels yoga class is free. Eola will be selling wine before and after the class.
