The Santiam Canyon area is home to the Willamette National Forest, Detroit Lake State Recreation Area and Silver Falls State Park. The Willamette National Forest has some of the best hunting areas in the Oregon Cascades providing a huge area open to the public for hunting. Best hunting opportunities are for elk, deer and black bear. Potential hunters must contact the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife for regulations. Detroit Lake State Recreation Area provides many easily accessible locations for avid fishermen. Rainbow trout, Kokanee salmon, land-lock chinook and a few bullhead catfish can be found in this 400+ foot deep lake. Detroit Lake is also great for all water activities including water skiing. The Detroit Recreation Area offers winter activities such as skiing, snowboarding, snowmobiling, sledding or just having a good old-fashioned snowball fight. Silver Falls State Park is nestled in the lower elevation of Oregon’s Cascade Mountains in a temperate rain forest. It is here that hikers can experience The Canyon Trail which is a nationally recognized trail system that leads hikers to 10 majestic waterfalls, ranging from the grand South Falls (177 feet), to the delicate Drake Falls (27 feet). Four of these falls have an amphitheater-like surrounding where you can walk behind the falls and feel the misty, crisp spray.
