North of Salem on Interstate 5, 47 miles from Salem, is Oregon's largest city,
Portland. Portland is known as the "City of Roses". This major metropolitan
area is a nice day trip from Salem. Portland is home to the Oregon Zoo, Oregon
Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI) and many visitor friendly attractions.
Like Salem, Portland is divided by the Willamette River, which makes a beautiful

Northwest of Salem via Hwy. 221 is the diverse city of McMinnville.
McMinnville has easy access to Hwy. 18 which leads to the Oregon coast.
This city is the home of the Evergreen
Aviation Museum and The Captain Michael
King Smith Educational Institute. The museum houses the largest aircraft ever
built: the HK-1 Hughes Flying Boat, better known as the Spruce Goose. The quaint
downtown offers a unique blend of old and new retail and fabulous eateries.
McMinnville is also known for the International Pinot Noir celebration.
