Climbing for The Cure - Scott Sadler, Owner of The Arbor Cafe & BakerySalem resident and SCVA member, Scott Sadler, will climb Mt. Rainier on July 1-4, 2008, to join in the fight against breast cancer. He is among more than 100 ordinary people making quests for mountain summits as part of Climb to Fight Breast Cancer, a fundraiser for the Seattle, Wash.-based Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. Along with his fellow Mt. Rainier climbers, Scott has pledged to raise a minimum of $5,000 for breast cancer research programs being conducted at the Hutchinson Center. This is the second peak Scott has climbed as part of Climb to Fight Breast Cancer – in 2006, he and his climbing partner of 20 years, Mark Rosenfield, climbed Mt. Hood. Says Scott, “We are climbing again because we fell in love with the people and the effort some of them made to summit for themselves or loved ones. Some of these people had never been on a mountain before – they were an inspiration for me to do this again!” No stranger to mountain summits, Scott has climbed almost all of the peaks in the Pacific Northwest, as well as the volcanoes in Mexico. This will be his third climb of Mt. Rainier, and the third route. When Scott is not climbing mountains he stays busy in business and the community! As owner of The Arbor Café, he is also a business consultant and a small business advisor for the Small Business Development Center in Salem. He is a member of the Salem are Chamber of Commerce and the Salem Convention and Visitors Association, and he serves on the Finance Committee for the Oregon Health Fund Board. On a personal note, Scott is married, and has two cats and a chocolate Labrador. He is also a mentor to a child. This year marks the 11th anniversary of the Climb to Fight Breast Cancer. Since its inception it has raised more than $3 million for breast cancer research conducted at the Hutchinson Center. During the months of June, July and August, the guide services of Portland Parks & Recreation and Alpine Ascents International (AAI) will lead this year’s teams to the summits of Mt. Adams (Washington), Mt. Baker (Washington), Mt. Hood (Oregon), Mt. Elbrus (Russia), Mt. Kilimanjaro (Africa) and Mt. Rainier (Washington). And for the first time this year, teams led by AAI will climb the Volcanoes of Mexico during the months of October and November.
